The revelation that Nighthawk would go to the lengths he did caused friction among his teammates, and even led to blows with Defender. He ~~quite~~ the team because of that. When the criminal organization known as [[VIPER]] raided his college's computer science department for equipment, Mark rushed to stop them. A grenade seriously injured him and allowed the VIPER agents to flee, permanently scarred his face.

			Afterward, Mark was obsessed with stopping evil at all costs. He focused his mind and body to be relentless and unstoppable. He used his gifts to not only build a massive fortune in software, but also to create a fighting suit and equipment.
